Our Services

Chronic Constipation and Irritable Bowel Syndrome

There are about a million Hong Kong people suffering from chronic constipation and half a million from irritable bowel syndrome. Many studies in this field have been conducted, including the use of new pharmacological agent, biofeedback and colonic hydrotherapy. The Centre offers the following services:
  • Anorectal physiology studies
  • Colonic transit time
  • Biofeedback training
  • Fibroscan

Gastrointestinal and Liver Cancer Screening
The human gut harbors approximately 20% of all cancers. In Hong Kong, cancers from the gastrointestinal tract account for half of the ten major causes of cancer deaths in the recent years, i.e. colon, liver and stomach cancers rank second, third, and fourth respectively.

Targeted Population:
  • Colorectal Cancer:
Early screening or removal of colonic polyps enables one to prevent most cases of colorectal cancer and is cost-effective. It has been recommended that all subjects aged above 50 and at normal risk should be screened. Screening colonoscopy has been advocated as the choice of screening.

Recent studies have demonstrated a strong association between colorectal cancer and coronary artery disease, thus colonoscopy is a judicious choice for colorectal cancer screening in this sub-group.
  • Hepatocellular Carcinoma:
10% of the Hong Kong population is Hepatitis B Virus carrier, to which most cases of Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Hong Kong are related. A half-yearly regular check up is necessary to the assessment of Hepatitis B Virus and the appropriate use of anti-viral therapy for these patients if indicated.
  • Gastric Cancer:
50-60% of the Hong Kong population is infected by Helicobacter Pylori. There is strong evidence that eradication of Helicobacter pylori can prevent gastric cancer.

Intragastric Balloon for Diabetic Patients
The placement of intragastric balloon has been proven to be effective for weight reduction, particularly for patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) ≥ 25. In addition, it is demonstrated that the placement of intragastric balloon in obese patients (BMI ≥ 25) with poorly controlled diabetes (HbA1c ≥ 8) can effectively improve diabetic control.

This is a convenient and safe method. The centre provides this service not only for weight reduction or aesthetic purposes, but also for controlling diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea and metabolic syndrome.

Endoscopy Services
With the collaboration of the Endoscopy Centre, the centre provides a full range of endoscopy services, including diagnostic and therapeutic upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, endoscopic retrograde chloangio-pancreaticography (ERCP), single balloon enteroscopy, double balloon enteroscopy, video capsule endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, etc.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or acid reflux is a common disease in Hong Kong. Gastroesophageal reflux refers to the backflow of gastric juice into the esophagus. Symptoms include acid reflux, burning pain or discomfort in the chest, nausea and gas, foreign body sensation in the throat, difficulty in swallowing, persistent cough, and even lung infection.

Studies have found that most patients do not find that their discomfort is related to gastroesophageal reflux in the early to mid-term. Prolonged gastroesophageal reflux may cause esophageal inflammation, esophageal stricture, and even develop into precancerous lesions in severe cases. Early diagnosis and Treatment is necessary.

Please take 1 minute to complete the "GERD-Q Acid Reflux Symptom Questionnaire" approved by the Chinese University of Hong Kong to help you assess your risk of gastroesophageal reflux.
