Department of RadiotherapyOur Equipment ❯ Active Breathing Coordinator™ (ABC)

The Active Breathing Coordinator™ is used to minimize the anatomical movement in the chest and abdomen due to breathing. A patient needs to hold his/her breath during simulation and external beam radiotherapy with the aid of the ABC device. The ABC is indicated specially for various tumors like those in the breast, the lung, the liver, the pancreas and other thoracic tumors. Deep inspiration breath-hold (DIBH) provides immobilized anatomy and allows minimization of radiation dose to the critical organs or normal tissue surrounding the tumor.

In order to do an accurate breath-hold at a defined lung volume, the patient is coached before simulation and radiotherapy. The breath-hold periods can be monitored through a computer. The patient is required to control the balloon valve, which is connected to the flow meter device, to achieve accurate breath-hold periods at the same lung volume consistently.
