Department of RadiotherapyOur Techniques ❯ Stereotactic Radiosurgery or Stereotactic Radiation Therapy (SRS, SRT)

Mainly for treating tumours in the head and neck region. A special fixation device and delivery system are used to achieve high accuracy in the delivery of radiation. As compared to conventional treatment using a single radiation beam, these techniques are more accurate and safe to treat the cancer while protecting the healthy tissues.

Traditional radiation therapy uses a low daily dose for five to seven weeks while the Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) approach applies a high dose in very few treatments to completely destroy the tumor. It essentially means doing surgery with a radiation beam rather than with a scalpel. It can get to remote places in the body that are very difficult for a surgeon to reach. SRS is an option when the patient isn't a surgical candidate due to advanced age or poor medical condition.

Tomotherapy takes fresh images of the anatomy that allows us to see the location of the tumor immediately before treatment to make any necessary minor adjustments. It provides an added verification that we can accurately target the tumor and adequately spare the normal structures with the accurate immobilization device from Radionics.

If there is more than one lesion in the brain, We can treat all lesions simultaneously with tomotherapy. Treatment time for three lesions using traditional radiation therapy might have taken an hour and a half and long preparation time is usually necessary. With tomotherapy treatment, time is significantly reduced and the patient is only treated for 5 to 20 minutes.
