Companion Room
While most rooms and wards can oversee the expansive view of Happy Valley, the Ellen Suite on 37/F enjoys the best skyline. Features common to all rooms are also available in the Ellen Suite. Homey and spacious, cozy and technologically advanced, the Ellen Suite brings one an unprecedented and unparalleled hospital accommodation. (For more specific features and facilities, please refer to the "Room Type" of the Hospital's website.)
On top of comfort and convenience, the Suite's security is redoubled with the magic eye and two automatic doors. The magic eye is a small security device, by which the patient and his/her companion can monitor, recognise and communicate with those outside the Suite through a small screen. Once entry is approved, the main door will open automatically, and then one just has to lightly press a touch pad with built-in sensors to pass through the second door inside. The double-door setup guarantees maximum security to the patient and his/her companion with high-level surveillance.
Comfort
The Hospital is committed to provide maximum comfort and privacy to patients, no matter in which wards and rooms one stays. Features available to all 460 beds include a bedside panel featuring built-in alarm clock, nurse call and light controls. Each floor has a spacious waiting area for visitors.
For Suites (36/F) & Private Rooms, all of them have
- a sitting and/or dining area (Suites) of varying sizes, complete with amenities such as sofa, HDTV(s), DVD player, refrigerator, microwave oven, telephone, etc.
- companion room (Suites)/ companion bed (Private Rooms)
- private lavatory and shower room
- layered curtains, all remotely controllable by pressing the buttons on the beside panel so as to shield the room from sunlight
- a small screen with a trilingual (traditional and simplified Chinese, English and Japanese ) interface as light control
As for semi-private single rooms and general wards, shower and toilet facilities are shared among patients.
Technology
IE Buddy (Information plus Entertainment)
HKSH is the very first private hospital in Hong Kong to introduce a Patient Infotainment Terminal, IE Buddy at all its 460 beds. While common among the hospitals in Europe, this system is customised to meet the needs of the Hospital.
One of its unique features is bedside medication verification, which allows nurses to cross-check drug dispensing by scanning the barcode on a patient's wristband. A warning signal will show up on the screen if a wrong drug is delivered.
The IE Buddy also supports the following functions/services to deliver medical benefits and entertainment to patients:
Personalised Healthcare:
- Doctors can browse most clinical information on the monitor, among them are image reports, test results, patient assessment form and allergy information. Access is granted to authorised doctors and nurses only with their staff cards
Entertainment, Education & Communication:
- Educational videos and feature articles at one's fingertip
- Access to broadband internet, VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)
- Now TV, Satellite and local TV channels
- Hospital menu
Other Feature:
- Light control
Safety and Privacy
Every feature is meticulously designed with patients' safety in mind. For example, in all shared and private washrooms, stainless handrails are installed inside every shower room and next to the lavatory to assist mobility. In case of emergency during shower, patients can pull the long orange cord dangling nearby to call for assistance from on-duty nurses. Emergency call is also available on every bed panel within patients' reach. Placed beside each bed is an electronic personal safe for storing one's valuables.
While entry to all rooms and suites is restricted, patients staying at the General Wards can retain their privacy with expanded space between beds. The Hospital has also introduced the first ceiling-height movable partitions in Hong Kong. They can maintain patient privacy and, most importantly, minimize cross infection through droplet transmission.
As the major infection control facility, the Hospital has equipped its new isolation units with state-of-the-art features to prevent cross–infection. They include:
- mechanical ventilation and air conditioning
- a negative pressure air extraction system to prevent air carrying pathogens from returning to the isolation units
- an anteroom for staff gowning and de-gowning
- double automatic doors, controllable be touch pads with built-in sensors
- CCTV for communication between patients and their visitors
