Breast Reconstruction

Q1. What is the goal of breast reconstruction?
As far as surgery is concerned, breast reconstruction can only restore physical appearance, but not its function and sensation. However, the look of the breasts is crucial as it symbolises womanhood and impacts the patient’s psychological well-being. Breast reconstruction helps patients to restore self-image and regain a sense of normalcy.

Q2. What is the best timing for breast reconstruction? Can it be performed even years after the mastectomy?
Breast reconstruction can be performed at any time. Immediate breast reconstruction, the most common option, is performed during the same surgery as the mastectomy. Benefits include preserving more skin, reducing scarring, and achieving a better cosmetic outcome. For those who did not receive immediate reconstruction at the time of mastectomy, it is always possible to undergo the procedure later.

Q3. What are the types for breast reconstruction?
There are two main types of breast reconstruction: implant reconstruction with silicone implants, and tissue (flap) reconstruction using the patient’s own fat and tissues. In some cases, a combination of both implants and tissues is used for breast reconstruction.

Q4. Can the nipples and areolae be reconstructed?
Both nipples and areolae can be reconstructed. If they cannot be preserved due to tumour removal, reconstruction can be done about 3 months after surgery or upon completion of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Nipple reconstruction typically involves a minor flap surgical procedure, while the areolae can be reconstructed using tattooing techniques.

Q5. Does immediate reconstruction surgery affect subsequent cancer treatments?
Reconstruction surgery does not typically affect the subsequent treatments. A successful reconstruction will not hinder the progress of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Also it does not complicate the diagnosis of recurrence, as recurrences mostly occur in the subcutaneous tissue and can be detected during clinical examination by doctors.

Q6. Is breast reconstruction essential?
Breast reconstruction is optional and up to the patients to decide. It is not mandatory, but patients should be informed about this option and its feasibility at the time of mastectomy to make an informed decision.
