Postnatal Depression and Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS)
The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) is a questionnaire used to screen for potential postnatal depression. It consists of 10 questions that assess mothers their experiences over the last 7 days to quantify their emotional changes, such as anxiety, depression, tearfulness, insomnia, negative thoughts and self-harm ideas. It takes around 1 to 2 minutes to complete, with score ranging from 0 to 30. A score of 13 or higher is considered a potential indicator of postnatal depression, and it is advisable to consult a doctor. We recommend the EPDS be done at least once within the first two weeks post delivery. In case of any emotional changes during the first year, it can be repeated as well to screen for postnatal depression again.
