Department of
Nuclear Medicine &
Positron Emission Tomography
The Department of Nuclear Medicine & Positron Emission Tomography is the first private hospital offering a full nuclear medicine clinical service in Hong Kong. We aim at providing the highest quality Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT), Nuclear Medicine, Radionuclide Therapy and Radiopharmaceutical dispensing services to the community.
Background
Inaugurated in 1995, we have been providing a variety of nuclear medicine examination and therapy. A medical cyclotron, a radiopharmacy laboratory and the first PET scanner were established 4 years later. We became the first clinical PET center in Asia which set a milestone in the development of Hong Kong's medical imaging. Through decades in pursuit of excellence, we keep on enhancing our service by introducing advanced technologies and state-of-the-art equipment, as well as participating actively in academic research to enhance specialty knowledge and refine PET tracer synthesis spectrum. All these build a firm standing ground to strengthen our service scale and the leading role in the specialty.
First clinical PET Centre in Asia
In the beginning days of our establishment, we imported a CTI RDS III medical cyclotron and our first PET scanner for imaging service in oncology and neurological assessments including autism and Parkinson's disease. After a few years in early 2000s, we introduced the latest PET/CT scan technology at that time. We were the only non-FDG production centre in Hong Kong possessing the necessary technical and scientific skills to synthesize radiotracers tagged with fluorine-18, carbon-11, nitrogen-13 to target specific clinical needs in oncology, neurology and cardiology imaging. Those tracers are widely used in diagnosing certain types of cancer and neurologic diseases, yet some of them are too short-lived for transportation (only 20 minutes or less). As a result, patients from other local and overseas medical institutions are referred to us for comprehensive imaging and patient management. While some centers are now experimenting with tracer production, we, as the pioneer in local PET/CT services for more than 20 years, maintain a solid lead with continuous knowledge acquisition and equipment upgrades to offer the most reliable and all-round clinical services to our patients.
Advanced Nuclear Medicine Service and Facility
Our clinical services include Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT), Nuclear Medicine (NM), Radionuclide Therapy (RNT) and Radiopharmaceutical dispensing services. Different from other centers, a consultation by Nuclear Medicine Specialists will be conducted for patient such that the most effective and personalized procedures can be arranged according to patient's clinical need.
In order to provide comprehensive services and meet the growing clinical demand, we continuously introduce the latest technology in the molecular imaging field to Hong Kong. We have installed equipment with the finest technology necessary to cover our service scope, which includes 4 on-site medical cyclotrons, 2 radiopharmacy laboratories, 1 QC laboratory, 4 Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT) scanners, 2 Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT/CT) scanners and a dedicated SPECT cardiac camera.
In addition to diagnostic services, our department incorporates a unique facility to provide a full spectrum of Radionuclide Therapy services for treatment of cancer and metabolic diseases. Current scope of treatment services includes Iodine-131 for thyrotoxicosis, Iodine-131 for thyroid cancer ablation, Iodine-131 MIBG and Lutetium-177 with DOTA-Conjugated peptides for neuroendocrine tumor, Lutetium-177 PSMA for prostate cancer, Strontium-89 Chloride for bone metastases palliation, Radium-223 Dichloride for bone metastases of prostate cancer, Yttrium-90 Microspheres for liver tumors, and Yttrium-90 Zevalin radioimmunotherapy for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
We always promise a safe and reliable PET radiopharmaceuticals and radiotracers manufacturing. The Radiopharmacy and Quality Control Laboratories have an outstanding level in terms of technique and equipment. Our facility is fully licensed by the Department of Health of the Government of HKSAR for production and sales of PET tracers; accredited by the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS); and certified by the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) in collaboration with our Clinical Oncology Centre as the only private medical institution in Hong Kong for conducting clinical trials for human used drugs. With more than 20 years of experiences and unparalleled expertise, the team proactively source the latest and useful radiopharmaceutical around the world and import to Hong Kong. We also supply PET tracers to other local clinical centres, indicating that we are fully trusted and affirmed by the community.
